There is a short list of places in America where you can run a Boston qualifying time and spend the weekend in one of the country's finest luxury destinations. Aspen, Colorado is at the top of that list.

Maroon Bells peaks reflected in Maroon Lake in Aspen Colorado near the Aspen Valley Marathon course in summer

The Aspen Valley Marathon runs point-to-point from Wagner Park in downtown Aspen along the historic Rio Grande Trail to Lions Park in Basalt — a 26.2-mile journey that drops 1,400 feet in the first 20 miles before rolling to the finish at 6,600 feet. It is a legitimate Boston qualifier with a PR Score of 96.36. The field is small — just over 200 finishers — which means no crowds at the start, no fighting for road space, and no waiting for aid stations. It is exactly the kind of race the Endurance Edit reader finds: a course worth traveling for, in a destination worth building a weekend around.

And Aspen in July is extraordinary. The Elk Mountains above the town are fully green. Maroon Bells — among the most photographed peaks in North America — are accessible without the crowds of fall. The restaurant scene, anchored by properties like The Little Nell and the St. Regis, delivers dining that competes with any city in the country. The altitude is real and requires respect, but for the runner who trains for it and arrives a day early, it is manageable — and the racing advantage of a downhill course at elevation is real.

🏁 Aspen Valley Marathon — Race Essentials

Race Date:

The Aspen Valley Marathon runs annually in mid-to-late July. Registration opens in winter and the small field fills months in advance. This is not a last-minute registration race.

Course:

Point-to-point from Wagner Park in downtown Aspen to Lions Park in Basalt along the Rio Grande Trail. Starts at nearly 8,000 feet, drops 1,400 feet to 6,500 feet by mile 20, then rolls to the finish at 6,600 feet. Road and paved trail surface. Boston qualifier. Average race-day high of 58 degrees — ideal morning racing temperature, but the final six miles warm significantly as the sun rises over the valley.

Altitude:

This is the most important race essential. The Aspen Valley Marathon starts at 8,000 feet. Runners arriving from sea level need a minimum of 48 hours of altitude acclimatization before race morning — arriving Thursday for a Saturday race is the right call. Hydration requirements are significantly higher than at sea level. The Endurance Edit builds your arrival day into the weekend accordingly.

Logistics:

Shuttles provided from the finish area in Basalt to the start in Aspen on race morning. Packet pickup runs the day before the race. Small boutique field means race-morning logistics are smooth — no corrals, no 45-minute start pen waiting.

✈️ Getting to Aspen

Aspen-Pitkin County Airport (ASE)

Sits 10 minutes from downtown Aspen — one of the most convenient airport-to-destination relationships in American travel. American Eagle serves ASE with direct connections from Dallas, Chicago, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and Denver. United serves Denver direct.

For runners coming from markets not directly served, Denver International (DEN) is the hub, with connecting flights to ASE throughout the day or a four-hour drive through the Rockies via I-70 and Route 82 over Independence Pass — one of the great mountain drives in Colorado.

The Endurance Edit arranges private car pickup from ASE directly to your Aspen property. For runners driving from Denver, the Independence Pass approach via Route 82 is the recommended arrival route in summer — the pass opens in late May and the views from the summit are the first indication that this race weekend is going to be different from every other one on your calendar.

🏨 Where to Stay in Aspen for Marathon Weekend

Aspen has no shortage of luxury lodging. For marathon weekend, proximity to the Wagner Park start line and access to the Aspen spa and dining scene are the priorities.

👟 The 4-Day Aspen Valley Marathon Itinerary

The itinerary is the heart of the race weekend. Four days in Aspen built around a Boston qualifier at 8,000 feet.

Day 1 — Thursday  |  Arrive & Acclimatize

1:00 PM | Arrival & Check-In

Your private car from ASE delivers you to your Aspen property. Unpack your race kit. Drink a liter of water before you leave the room. Altitude acclimatization begins the moment you arrive and hydration is the most important thing you will do today. Move slowly. This is not a day for aggressive activity.

3:00 PM |  Rio Grande Trail — Easy Walk

Walk the first two miles of your race course on the Rio Grande Trail from Wagner Park. This is acclimatization work disguised as a preview. Feel the trail surface. Note the first downhill mile. Let the altitude register at walking pace so it does not surprise you at racing pace on Saturday morning.

5:30 PM |  Gondola Ride — Silver Queen

The Silver Queen Gondola rides to the summit of Aspen Mountain at 11,212 feet in summer — a 14-minute ride with Elk Mountain views that reframe the scale of where you are. At the summit, the Sundeck Restaurant serves cocktails and small plates with a panoramic view. Spend an hour. Come back down before sunset.

7:30 PM |  Dinner at Element 47 — The Little Nell

Element 47 is named for silver's atomic number — a nod to Aspen's mining past and the town's enduring relationship with precious things. The wine list holds a Wine Spectator Grand Award. The menu is locally sourced Rocky Mountain cuisine. For a Thursday arrival dinner, this is the table that sets the tone for the whole weekend. Reserve in advance through The Endurance Edit.

Day 2 — Friday  |  Maroon Bells & Packet Pickup

7:30 AM |  Maroon Bells — Golden Hour

The Maroon Bells are among the most photographed mountains in North America — two 14,000-foot peaks reflected in a glacial lake at 9,580 feet, surrounded by wildflowers in July. The public shuttle from Aspen runs from 8 AM; arriving earlier with a private car gets you Maroon Lake before the day visitors arrive and the light is at its finest. Bring your own camera and take your time.

10:30 AM | Maroon Bells Hike — Crater Lake Trail

The Crater Lake Trail is a 3.6-mile round trip with 600 feet of elevation gain — accessible, beautiful, and the right amount of movement for a runner two days out from a marathon. It pushes deeper into the Maroon Bells Wilderness past the crowds at the lake and earns views of the peaks from a perspective most visitors never reach. Moderate pace. This is a preview of the altitude, not a training run.

1:30 PM |  Lunch — Matsuhisa Aspen

Chef Nobu Matsuhisa opened his Aspen restaurant in 1998 and it has been one of the essential lunch tables in town ever since. The black cod miso is a signature. The light Japanese menu is precisely the right pre-race lunch — clean protein, controlled portions, no heaviness. Walk to the restaurant from your hotel.

3:30 PM | Packet Pickup

Collect your bib and confirm race morning shuttle logistics. The Aspen Valley Marathon is a small, well-organized event — packet pickup is efficient and the race director is accessible. Ask about current course conditions on the Rio Grande Trail and the weather forecast for Saturday morning.

7:00 PM | Elite Concierge Pre-Race Dinner

The Endurance Edit arranges a private pre-race dinner at your property restaurant or a reserved private dining room — a carbohydrate-forward menu from one of Aspen's top chefs, designed specifically for race eve at altitude. Higher carbohydrate loading matters more at elevation. Zero decision fatigue. The pasta is made in-house. You sleep having eaten exactly right for an 8,000-foot start.

Day 3 — Saturday  |  Race Day

5:00 AM | Pre-Race Morning Protocol

Eat your practiced meal. The altitude makes breakfast feel less appealing than at sea level — eat anyway. Dress in your race kit with a throwaway layer for the cold start. The temperature at Wagner Park at race time will be in the low 40s. The shuttle departs from Basalt to the Aspen start early — confirm timing at packet pickup Friday.

7:30 AM | Race Start — Wagner Park, Aspen

The Aspen Valley Marathon starts at nearly 8,000 feet in the early morning quiet of downtown Aspen, with the Elk Mountains above the town as the sky lightens. The first two miles drop immediately. The Rio Grande Trail through the valley is one of the finest marathon courses in the American West — alpine forest, river views, Elk Mountain silhouettes on the horizon. Run the first 10 miles conservatively. The miles 9-11 section has significant climbing. The last six miles are rolling and warm. Trust the training.

11:00 AM | Finish Line — Lions Park, Basalt

Cross the finish line at Lions Park in Basalt. The post-race food is generous — reviewers specifically cite the finish line spread. Your private car from The Endurance Edit returns you to Aspen for recovery. The 30-minute drive back up to Aspen is the right decompression between the race and the rest of the weekend.

2:00 PM | Recovery Afternoon

Ice bath or cold river if your protocol calls for it. Hot tub at the property. Protein. Sleep. The altitude recovery is slower than at sea level — give the body the full afternoon.

7:30 PM | Post-Race Dinner — Hotel Jerome J-Bar or Matsuhisa

The J-Bar at Hotel Jerome has been Aspen's gathering place since 1889. Post-race Saturday evening, it is exactly the right atmosphere — historic, warm, celebratory without being loud. Order the burger and a whiskey. You earned both.

Day 4 — Sunday  |  Spa & Departure

8:00 AM | Morning Spa — RAKxa at St. Regis or The Little Nell

The Endurance Edit books a 60-minute deep tissue or sports recovery massage alongside your property reservation — it is waiting for you Sunday morning without any additional coordination. The RAKxa Wellness Spa at the St. Regis with its Confluence hot springs pools is the finest recovery environment in Aspen. We book it. You show up.

10:30 AM |  Final Walk — Aspen Downtown Core

A last unhurried walk through Aspen's downtown. The Hyman Avenue Mall. The galleries. One stop at a boutique that is specific to this town. One object that returns you here when you see it on a shelf at home.

12:00 PM |  Departure

Your private car returns you to ASE. The race qualified you or it didn't — either way, this weekend was worth building. The race is the race. The weekend is the memory.
