There is a moment around mile 16 of the Mount Desert Island Marathon when the course turns onto Sargeant Drive along Somes Sound — the only fjord on the Atlantic Coast — and the water is so still and the foliage so deeply red that runners have stopped mid-race just to take it in. That moment is why people come back.

The MDI Marathon runs the weekend after Indigenous Peoples' Day every October, entirely through Acadia National Park at peak fall foliage. Runner's World, ESPN, and Outside Magazine have all called it North America's most scenic marathon. The course starts in Bar Harbor, crosses 26.2 miles of coastline, mountains, fjord, and fishing village, and finishes in Southwest Harbor with a Lobster Claw medal waiting at the line.

🏁 Mount Desert Island Marathon: Race Details and Course Overview

The MDI Marathon is a 26.2-mile point-to-point Boston qualifier that begins in downtown Bar Harbor and finishes in Southwest Harbor on the island's quiet western side. The half-marathon starts in Northeast Harbor at the course's halfway mark, and all three races — marathon, half, and relay — share the same finish line. Race morning gun time is 8:30am. The course and finish line close at 2:30pm.

The course is not flat. A 150-foot climb from miles one through three crests the ridge between Champlain and Dorr Mountains. Route 3 then drops to Otter Creek and the ocean appears at the granite headlands. Rolling terrain carries runners through Seal Harbor and Northeast Harbor to the halfway mark at Somes Sound, where Sargeant Drive traces the fjord's edge through mile 17. A sharp climb at miles 17–18 tests legs that have been working since Bar Harbor. A gradual rise through Somesville builds to the course high point at mile 25, and the final 1.2 miles descend into Southwest Harbor.

Race Weekend Logistics

Bib pickup is at the MDI YMCA at 21 Park Street in Bar Harbor — Friday 3pm to 7pm, Saturday 10am to 5pm. You must pick up in person with photo ID. No proxies. Free shuttle buses run from the Southwest Harbor finish back to the Bar Harbor Village Green from 9am to 3pm on race day. A Finish Line Festival runs 9am to 3pm in Southwest Harbor.

✈️ How to Get to Bar Harbor, Maine for the MDI Marathon

Bar Harbor sits on Mount Desert Island off the Maine coast, connected to the mainland by a short causeway. The most practical airport is Bangor International (BGR), approximately 45 minutes away. Bar Harbor Airport (BHB) is 12 miles from town and accepts small regional aircraft. Boston Logan (BOS) is a viable fly-in option at about 5 hours by car for those combining the race with a broader New England trip.

A private SUV meets you at the terminal and delivers you to the hotel. October on MDI is peak foliage season — roads are busy and parking is premium. Your Elite Concierge service handles door-to-door pickup from Bangor or Bar Harbor airport, with a rental car waiting at the property for your use throughout the stay.

🏨 Where to Stay for the Mount Desert Island Marathon

Bar Harbor has three properties that serve the race weekend at the level this trip deserves. Book early — October foliage season on MDI is one of the most competitive lodging markets in New England.

🏃‍♀️‍➡️ 4-Day Mount Desert Island Marathon Itinerary

Day 1 | Thursday: Arrive on the Island

Afternoon | Arrival

Your private SUV delivers you from the airport to Bar Harbor — no rental counters, no navigation on unfamiliar coastal roads at the end of a travel day. You arrive on Mount Desert Island the right way: already relaxed, with a rental car waiting and nothing left to arrange before the weekend begins.

Afternoon | Walk Bar Harbor

Bar Harbor in October is the best version of itself. The summer crowds are gone, the trees are burning against the granite, the lobster boats are still working. Walk Cottage Street, browse the galleries, stop for coffee. Find the Village Green and stand at the start line. You will be here Sunday morning at 8:30am with 26.2 miles of Acadia ahead of you.

Evening | Dinner at The Reading Room

The Bar Harbor Inn's signature waterfront restaurant serves fresh local seafood with Frenchman Bay on three sides. In October the menu is at its best — last lobster of the season, Maine scallops, chowder made right. Order liberally. You are in Maine and you have been training for months.

Day 2 | Friday: Cadillac Mountain and the Expo

Pre-Dawn | Sunrise on Cadillac Mountain

This experience belongs only to this race weekend. Cadillac Mountain — 1,532 feet, the highest point on the Eastern Seaboard — is the first place in the United States to see the sunrise from October through March. Your Elite Concierge team secures the timed vehicle entry permit in advance. You drive up in the dark and watch the sun rise over the Atlantic and Frenchman Bay below.

Morning | Acadia National Park Carriage Roads

After the summit, take one of the 45 miles of historic carriage roads built by John D. Rockefeller Jr. in Acadia — vehicle-free gravel paths through birch and maple at peak color. In October the light comes in low and gold through the trees. Keep it easy: 30 to 45 minutes, flat, intentionally unhurried. Pick up coffee on the way back.

Afternoon | Bib Pickup at MDI YMCA

Bib pickup is at the MDI YMCA at 21 Park Street, open Friday 3pm to 7pm. Bring your photo ID — you must pick up in person, no exceptions. Browse the pre-race expo while you're there. Your bib number is published approximately one week before the race and included in your Elite Concierge race brief.

Evening | Dinner at Havana

Havana on Main Street is one of Bar Harbor's most consistently praised restaurants — Latin-inspired seasonal cuisine, a serious cocktail program, an intimate dining room. Order the seafood, avoid the full lobster if you're running in the morning. Make a reservation before the trip.

Day 3 | Saturday: The Quiet Side

Morning | Drive the Course and Bass Harbor Head Light

Saturday morning, drive Sargeant Drive along Somes Sound — pull over along the fjord and stand outside the car. Look at what you are going to run through tomorrow. Then continue to Southwest Harbor and walk the final half-mile into the finish. From there it is a 10-minute drive to Bass Harbor Head Light — a 19th-century lighthouse on pink granite above the Atlantic, one of the most photographed spots in Maine.

Mid-Morning | The Abbe Museum

The Abbe Museum on Mount Desert Street is the first Smithsonian affiliate in Maine, dedicated to the art, culture, and history of the Wabanaki — the Indigenous peoples who have lived on this island for 12,000 years. The collection spans centuries of life on land you are about to run across.

Afternoon | Gear Check and Rest

Back at the hotel by noon and horizontal from there. Lay out your race kit — bib, timing chip, arm warmers, gels, drop bag with dry clothes and recovery shoes. Read your Elite Concierge race brief once. Everything is confirmed. Your only job from here until dinner is to stay off your feet.

Evening | Race Eve Dinner at Bluenose Inn

The Looking Glass at the Bluenose Inn has panoramic Frenchman Bay views and handles pasta properly. Order a full plate, eat past comfort, drink only water. The piano player will be going in the Great Room. Be in bed by 9pm.

Day 4 | Sunday: Race Day

5:00am | Wake

Coffee and whatever you trained with for breakfast. Nothing new today. Give your food at least 90 minutes before the gun.

7:00am | Arrive at the Start

The Village Green in downtown Bar Harbor. Drop your bag at the collection point — it travels to the finish before the gun. Find your corral and take in the start line atmosphere: salt air, dark mountains behind town, fog still on Frenchman Bay. This is one of the great race starts in American distance running.

8:30am | Gun Time

The course drops out of Bar Harbor slightly downhill, then climbs sharply over the first three miles with Cadillac Mountain overhead. The ocean appears at mile six and the coastline opens past Seal Harbor. The second half along Somes Sound is where this race lives — granite cliffs, still water, a closed road through the only fjord on the Atlantic Coast. There is a hard climb before mile 18 and a long rise through Somesville before the course peaks at mile 25. Everything after that is downhill into Southwest Harbor.

Finish | Southwest Harbor

The Crusher Claw goes around your neck at the finish line. Find your people on Main Street where the road is closed. The Finish Line Festival runs until 3pm. You ran 26.2 miles through Acadia at peak fall foliage. Take your time with the finish.

Post-Race | Recovery

If you are at The Claremont, your room is a short walk from the finish. If you are in Bar Harbor, the free shuttle runs back until 3pm. Return to the hotel, run a long hot shower, and get horizontal. Your post-race spa treatment is already booked. Room service tonight. Tomorrow morning you will be sore and Maine will still be outside the window.

⭐️ MDI Marathon Planning: What the Elite Concierge Service Covers

The MDI Marathon requires advance planning that most runners underestimate. Bar Harbor in October foliage season is among the most competitive lodging markets in New England. The race is point-to-point with shuttle logistics, paid parking, and road restrictions that catch first-timers off guard. The Elite Concierge service exists so that none of it does.

From there, the service covers your private airport transfer, Cadillac Mountain summit permit, bib pickup logistics, drop bag coordination, race-morning operations plan, spectator itinerary, spa booking, and dining reservations. You land in Maine with everything in place. The only thing left to manage is 26.2 miles of the most beautiful marathon course in North America.

⌚️ Mount Desert Island Marathon Packing List: 7 Race Weekend Essentials

Seven items we recommend for every race weekend client — all available on Amazon.

Garmin Forerunner 965 — Dual-frequency GPS and full elevation mapping for a course with significant grade changes. The climb data alone is worth having on your wrist from mile one.

Hoka Clifton 9 — Maximum cushioning for 26.2 miles of rolling Maine coast. Not a carbon-plated racer — a shoe that protects your legs through the back half of a hilly marathon. The right call for this course.

CEP Compression Socks — Top-rated graduated compression for race day and the 48 hours after. The shuttle back to Bar Harbor and the drive home both benefit from these.

Nathan Peak Hydration Belt — Aid stations every two miles with water and Gatorade. Your gels are your responsibility. The Nathan Peak carries nutrition and an 18oz flask without bouncing.

Brooks Canopy Jacket — October in Bar Harbor means 40-degree mornings at the start line. The Canopy packs into its own chest pocket, weighs nothing, and goes in your drop bag after mile three when you've warmed up. Essential.

Body Glide Original Anti-Chafe Balm — Apply everywhere before you leave the hotel. Marathon distance in October humidity with a jacket in miles one through three — friction points will find you.

Theragun Mini — Post-race percussion therapy for the hotel room Sunday afternoon and Monday morning before travel. The miles 17-18 climb will still be in your quads. Work it out.

👟 The Most Scenic Marathon in North America

The MDI Marathon has been called the most scenic race in North America by nearly every publication that covers destination running. Here the title holds. There is nothing else in American road racing that looks like Sargeant Drive at mile 15 on an October morning with peak foliage and Somes Sound still below the granite cliffs.

Bar Harbor makes the four days around the race worth the trip in their own right. Acadia National Park in October is one of the great natural experiences in the Northeast. The Elite Concierge service makes sure the weekend around the marathon matches the marathon itself. We handle the plan — the permits, the reservations, the logistics, the race strategy. You handle the 26.2 miles.
