The Montana Marathon is one of the fastest, most scenic courses in the American West. Point-to-point from the open prairie town of Molt into the heart of Billings, with a net downhill drop of over 1,000 feet and big sky in every direction — this is a Boston Qualifier that also happens to feel like the set of a Western film. Fast course. Friendly people. Beautiful landscape. That's not marketing copy. That's the actual experience.

But the Montana Marathon is only part of the story. Billings sits at the gateway to some of the most dramatic terrain in North America. Yellowstone National Park is accessible via the Beartooth Highway — what Charles Kuralt called the most beautiful drive in America — just two to three hours from your hotel. This is a city that earned the nickname Montana's Trailhead, and a race weekend here deserves to be treated as exactly that.

The Montana Marathon is a USATF certified, Boston Qualifying course managed by 406 Race Series. The full marathon starts at the Community Center in Molt, MT and finishes at Pioneer Park in downtown Billings — a point-to-point course with a net downhill of over 1,000 feet and rolling hills through the first ten miles before the final 16 deliver a steady, fast descent into the city. Race weekend includes a Friday Kids Fun Run, Saturday expo, and Sunday full marathon, half marathon, 10K, and 5K. Marathon start time is early morning with mandatory shuttle from Billings Senior High School — the last bus departs at 7:30 AM.



✈️ Getting To Billings for Your Montana Marathon


Billings Logan International Airport (BIL) has daily nonstop flights from Denver, Seattle, Portland, Dallas-Fort Worth, Minneapolis, and Salt Lake City. Delta, United, and Alaska all serve the route. The airport sits about ten minutes from downtown Billings — one of the most convenient race-city logistics you will find anywhere.

The race-adjacent full-service hotel, centrally located in downtown Billings with indoor pool, spa, fitness center, and the full infrastructure of a large property built to handle race weekend volume. The indoor pool is the move for post-race recovery. If you are traveling with a support crew — a partner, family, or friends who aren't running — the DoubleTree gives everyone room to spread out and amenities to keep them occupied while you're on course. Race morning shuttle pickup from Billings Senior High School is minutes away. Best for runners with support crews or anyone who wants recovery amenities built in.

Offers the most space and the best value for runners traveling with family. All-suite property with full kitchens — refrigerator, microwave, two-burner stove, dishwasher — plus a separate living area with sofabed, which matters when you’re sharing a room with people who are not running 26 miles at 6 AM. Free hot breakfast buffet every morning, indoor saline pool, hot tub, outdoor courtyard with fire pit, and a complimentary airport shuttle. Located about 10 minutes from downtown and the finish line, so race morning requires a short drive. Best for runners with families or extended stay guests who want the most room to spread out and the least stress about feeding people who aren’t on a race-day nutrition plan.




🏃‍♀️‍➡️ Your Race Weekend in Billings


You have trained for months. The last thing you need is a chaotic travel day stacked on top of a race weekend. Day one is intentionally light — arrive, settle, preview the course finish, and eat something good. That's it.


Day 1 | Arrive & Settle


Afternoon | Private car from BIL to your hotel.

Your driver has your flight details. Your room is set to your preferences. If you're at the Ranch, the drive itself is part of the experience — 90 minutes through the Yellowstone River Valley with the Beartooth Mountains rising in the distance.


3:00 PM | Walk Pioneer Park.

This is where you finish on Sunday. Walk the final quarter mile of the course — where it comes in from the street, where the finish arch sits, where the crowds will be.


4:00 PM | Easy walk through historic downtown Billings.

The Alberta Bair Theater anchors one end; the Yellowstone Art Museum is a five-minute walk. Downtown is compact and flat — good for shaking out travel legs without overdoing it.


6:00 PM | Pre-race dinner.

Walker's Grill on North 27th is a James Beard semi-finalist — Montana-sourced proteins, serious wine list, a room that feels like a city without pretending to be one. The Marble Table is the other James Beard semi-finalist, newer and more contemporary. TEN at the Northern if you want to stay on-property. The Endurance Edit holds your reservation. Just eat what you always eat the night before a race.

Day 2 | Saturday is expo day


Keep it short. The biggest mistake runners make the day before a race is standing on concrete floors at an expo for three hours and arriving at Sunday's start line with tired legs. Get in, get your packet, and get out.


8:00 AM |  Breakfast at Bernie's Diner at the Northern, or Paul's Pancake Parlor

Big plates, exactly the kind of place locals send you to. Eat what you know. This is not the morning for culinary adventure.


10:00 AM | Expo at Caras Park

Packet pickup, bib, finisher medal preview. This is a community race — intentionally lean. In and out in under an hour.


11:30 AM | Short shakeout run

Twenty minutes maximum. The Riverfront Trail along the Yellowstone River runs through downtown — paved, flat, one of the better pre-race shakeout routes in any marathon city.


1:00 PM | Lunch

Light. The Marble Table for something elevated, or grab something simple from downtown. No red meat, no alcohol, nothing your stomach has to work hard to process. You know this.


3:00 PM | Off your feet

Hotel room, legs elevated. The expo is done. The prep is done.


5:30 PM | Final gear check

Your shuttle time is already confirmed by The Endurance Edit — whether you're leaving from downtown or from the Ranch. You are not figuring this out in the morning.


7:00 PM | Early dinner or room service

Carb-forward, familiar, early enough to digest before sleep. Lights out by 9 PM.

Day 3 | Race Day — This is the Day You Came For


The Montana Marathon starts at 6:00 AM in Molt. The mandatory shuttle from Billings Senior High School closes at 7:30 AM for the half marathon — plan your morning backward from there. If you are staying downtown, that is a 6:45 AM departure from your hotel. Your driver has the shuttle location, the parking, and your bag drop handled. You just have to show up at your car.


Pre-dawn | Car pickup

either from your downtown hotel or from the Ranch. Coffee in hand. Big sky overhead. The open prairie outside Molt in the dark before a race start is one of those things you remember.


Race Start | 6:00 AM cannon

The course opens across the rolling plains outside Molt and descends steadily toward Billings. Wide open skies, mountain views, and the steady sound of a thousand pairs of feet on open road. The first ten miles roll. The final sixteen fall. Trust the downhill — it is real and it is significant.


Finish | Pioneer Park, downtown Billings

Cross the line. Get your medal. Eat everything at the post-race party. You've earned all of it.


Mid-Morning | Recovery begins

Your hotel room is ready. If you're at the Northern, you're walking distance from the finish. If you're at the DoubleTree, the indoor pool is calling. If you're at the Ranch, your car is waiting to take you back through the valley — a 90-minute decompression drive through some of the most beautiful terrain in Montana.


2:00 PM | Spa recovery.

The Endurance Edit schedules a post-race massage for the afternoon — timed so your muscles have cooled down from race exertion but treatment is early enough to start the recovery process before tomorrow. Evening | Rest

Order room service or eat whatever sounds right. The Yellowstone Cellars & Winery near downtown does complimentary tastings daily — a post-race glass of Montana wine in the sun is not a bad way to close a race day.

Day 4 | Recovery Day — The Beartooth Highway and Big Sky Country


Most runners pack up and fly home the morning after their race. That is the wrong call in Billings. The Beartooth Highway to Yellowstone is one of those drives that changes how you think about the American West. Take the extra day.


8:00 AM | Breakfast

Eat a real meal — your body burned through everything yesterday.


9:00 AM | Depart for Red Lodge

One hour south on Highway 212. A genuine western mountain town at the foot of the Beartooth. Walk the main street, grab coffee, then head up.


10:30 AM | Begin the Beartooth Highway

Seventy miles from Red Lodge through Beartooth Pass at 10,947 feet to the northeast entrance of Yellowstone. Switchbacks, alpine tundra, glacial lakes, views that make people pull over and go quiet. Plan to stop often. Charles Kuralt was not wrong.


1:00 PM | Northeast entrance to Yellowstone

Even two hours in the Lamar Valley — the park's quietest, wildest corridor — is enough to see bison herds, elk, and landscape that makes everything else look ordinary.


4:00 PM | Turn back through Red Lodge.

Dinner in town before the highway drive back to Billings — about an hour, with the Beartooth Mountains in your rearview the whole way.


Evening | Final night in Billings

Yellowstone Cellars & Winery for a post-race glass. Montana Brewing Company for a craft beer recap. Early flight tomorrow — or don't.

👟 What to Pack for the Montana Marathon


1.  A race vest or running belt  —  The course is point-to-point with good aid stations, but your nutrition needs to travel with you. Train in whatever you race in.


2.  Marathon nutrition — gels or chews  —  Pack what you've trained with, not what's at the expo. Race morning is not the time to experiment.


3.  An insulated water bottle  —  For the days before and after the race. Billings sits at 3,100 feet and hydration matters more than it does at sea level.


4.  A packable lightweight jacket  —  For the Beartooth Highway on recovery day. The summit runs 20-30 degrees colder than the city. Non-negotiable.


5.  Compression recovery tights  —  Post-race. Wear them through recovery day. Your legs will feel the difference on the Beartooth drive.


6.  A foam roller or massage ball  —  Hotel room recovery tool. Compact enough to pack, significant enough to matter after 26.2 miles of downhill.


7.  Anti-chafe balm  —  A 1,000-foot downhill over 26 miles is harder on your body than a flat course. Pack this. Use it liberally.
